Sisterly Love! Polar Bear Twins Sweetly Reunited at Detroit Zoo
Reunited and it feels so good! Finally, after just over 2 years apart the twin polar bear cubs born at the Detroit Zoo have had their family reunion.
The zoo announced the two polar bear cubs were born at the zoo on November 17, 2020, making them the first polar bears to be born and successfully raised at the facility since 2004. The twins were born to proud parents 8-year-old mother Suka, and 16-year-old father, Nuka.

Unfortunately, the cubs, named Astra and Laerke, were separated a few days after birth when Laerke had a medical emergency that required around-the-clock care from the staff at the Detroit Zoo. By the time Laerke recovered, mom Suka didn't recognize her cub. As a result, the two bears grew up separately. Astra stayed with Suka and Laerke with a grizzly bear named Jebbie.
The girls were finally reunited this week and it was like they were never apart. The sisterly bond kicked in the two clicked immediately according to the Detroit Zoo.
“Astra and Laerke are back together again and seem to be making up for lost playtime!”, zoo officials said in an Facebook post.
While the sisters settle into being lifelong friends, their parents are living together in a separate area of the Arctic Ring of Life at the zoo. Be sure to stop by and visit the twins at the Detroit Zoo soon for some serious cuteness overload.
