BREAKING: Stay Out of Downtown Lapeer, Possible Gas Leak
Consumers crews are investigating a possible gas leak in downtown Lapeer and police urging people to STAY AWAY.
Some potentially serious news out of Lapeer this morning - after reports overnight of manholes exploding and the smell of gas, the authorities are telling people to stay OUT of downtown.
Investigations are ongoing but residents reported the strong smell of gas in the overnight hours. According to LPO Night Poster on Facebook:
EXPLOSIONS COMPLAINT / LAPEER FIRE: Police report explosions downtown Lapeer, and manhole covers blown off. There was 4-5 off on N. Saginaw St.. There was 2 off at Court St.and W.Nepessing St. The 100 Blk of W.Nepessing St states they have had a smell of natural gas in their home all day yesterday.They stated Consumers was out there fixing a gas leak. % blk of E.Genesee St had a gas leak also.City Police witnessed the manhole covers blowing off. Police had smoke coming from manhole cover on Pine St. in the alley., W. Nepessing St,and Court St. Police had a weird smell at Pine St and the alley also. Fire has a manhole cover off at Mill St in front of the church and a strong smell of gasoline.102 requested the DPW respond. 102 states this is due to gasoline leak.
