In the wake of the Oxford High School shooting that left four people dead and injured several other, thousands of parents and students are on edge about returning to school. School staff, police, and others have been working overtime when it comes to threats on the schools.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has now charged a 17-year-old student for threatening Southwestern Academy with a shooting. The threats were allegedly made by the student while on the bus. The student recorded a rap-style video that she then posted on social media.

Prosecutor Leyton has charged the student as a juvenile with one count of false threat of terrorism and one count of using a computer to commit a crime. Each of those charges are 20-year felonies.

I think it is safe to say that things have really spiraled out of control in the last few days. Copycat threats and a lot of rumors have given the schools a very uneasy feeling. In Genesee County alone, all 21 school districts canceled classes today. This coming from rumors and threats being shared on social media and causing a lot of anxiety. The Genesee County Superintendents Association has urged parents to talk to their kids about the seriousness and consequences of making threats towards the school.

Sadly, well let's be honest, kids can make dumb decisions. I remember similar things from when I was younger, like pulling the fire alarms or even a bomb threat. Today has become much worse from when I was a kid. Hopefully, we can all get through to the kids and school can get back to normal, or as normal as possible soon.
