Shots Fired On The Mackinac Bridge After A Road Rage Incident
Driving over the Mackinac Bridge can be nerve racking enough, but imagine hearing gunshots while you were on the bridge.
That's exactly what happened on Saturday, June 12th as the bridge was packed with weekend traffic. The Michigan State Police reported the incident and arrested one man afterward. The report tells about two vehicles traveling to the bridge from the Upper Peninsula, when they reached a point where the two lanes had to merge. After one car would not let the second car merge, tensions were heated. Apparently this also happened during some construction on US 2 in the U.P.
The two drivers both managed to make it through the toll booth, then had to merge into one lane. That's when William Pirkola (pictured above) crashed his car into the other vehicle. The confrontation got even more heated and Pirkola stepped out of his car and fired a gun into the air.
I'm sure there was much more bickering and such, but I didn't want to make you wait any longer. This idiot fired a gun into the air on the Mackinac Bridge when it was packed with weekend traffic. Let's unpack what a dumb move this really is.
The Mackinac Bridge Walk Is Still On For 2021
The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge with long steel cables running the entire length. I don't think a bullet could break one, but imagine if it did! The other part is that if the bullet didn't break it, it would ricochet off somewhere. The other obvious part to this is that the bullet will eventually have to come down. Even if it did miss the cars on the bridge, there are always a ton of boats out on the water.
Luckily the MSP arrested Pirkola and he is being charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.
We all know how frustrating summer traffic in Michigan can become, especially with all of the construction. We all need to do everything we can to keep our cool while driving, and make sure we don't let a moment of road rage anger ruin the summer for us or other people around us.
