Massive Recall For Kids’ Bikes in Michigan Due Injuries
If your little one has been cruising around on a bike recently, you might want to double-check its make and model. Thousands of kids' bicycles are being recalled due to a potential risk of injury.
Thousands of bikes sold by REI across this country including here in Michigan are being recalled due to issues that could pose a danger to young riders. The recall involves more than 75,000 kid bikes with training wheels that pose a risk.
According to a notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, REI is Co-op Cycles REV Kid’s Bicycles with training wheels because the training wheel assembly knob can loosen and detach from the bicycle, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. According to the notice, the company has received four reports so far of the training wheels falling off resulting in such injuries as scrapes, bruising, and broken arms.
What REI Bikes Are Being Recalled?
The recall involves REI Co-op Cycles REV 12-, 16-, or 20-inch kid’s bicycles (all model years 2022-2024). The serial numbers included in the recall begin with "ET22," "ET23," "01VX" or "07VX." The serial number is printed underneath the bike frame on the bottom bracket or down tube. The recalled bikes were sold in REI stores nationwide and online from March 2022 through May 2024 and range in price from $200 to $300.
What To Do if You Have Recalled REI Children's Bike?
If you are no longer using the training wheels on the bike, you are good to continue letting your child ride. If the training wheels are being used, you should immediately stop using the bike. Consumers can contact their local REI store to schedule a bike repair for free, including replacing the training wheel attachments.
