More Job Cuts at One of Michigan’s Top Grocery Chains
Less than two months after a major workforce reduction, one of the top grocery chains in Michigan is eliminating even more positions.
In December 2024, a federal judge blocked a proposed merger between Albertsons and Kroger. Shortly thereafter, Kroger cut roughly 200 people from its corporate roster.
This month, the Cincinati-based retailer is at it again.
Kroger Laying Off More Employees
Kroger has not disclosed the number of people that are being laid off but confirms to the Cincinati Enquirer that another round of cuts has taken place. Some of the positiotions are within Kroger's 84.51 division, a subsidiary of the company that analyzes retail data.
A Kroger spokesperson tells the paper its latest cuts are part of an 'efficiency' initiative designed to better serve customers.
"The best way we can accomplish this goal is to focus on the key priorities ... as part of this prioritization work and improved efficiencies, we restructured a few teams and eliminated a small number of roles," the spokesperson tells the paper.
Other Changes at Kroger
Earlier this month, Kroger announced the creation of a new e-commerce unit designed to enhance its online presence and grow online sales. Kroger's online sales were reported to be $13 billion in 2024.
After more than four decades with the company, Kroger CEO Rodney McMullin resigned from his position earlier this month.
McMullen's sudden resignation followed a probe into his personal conduct, the details of which were not disclosed.
