Have you ever watched a sporting event and gotten mad at the ref, umpire, or other official who made a bad call? Maybe it was that recent call that may have caused the Lions to miss out on a Super Bowl win, or a terrible call at a Tigers game.

Opening Day is coming soon, and MLB is debuting something new this season. It’s a new technology that will allow challenges to overturn bad calls, basically preventing even fictional bad calls like those found in the 1989 comedy ‘The Naked Gun’ from happening.

Here’s how it works. Each team gets two challenges per game, and only the batter, pitcher, or catcher can call for one. No managers yelling from the dugout, no replay help, just a quick decision in the moment. Why This New MLB Rule Could Change the Game

If the call is overturned, the team keeps its challenge. If not, they lose it. So there’s actually some strategy involved. You don’t want to waste one early and regret it later. And honestly, that strategy might be where this gets really interesting.
