Yesterday was a sad day for fans of the Detroit Tigers as we lost a former pitcher in a tragic accident.

According to a reporter for Major League Baseball, it happened in the Dominican Republic when a roof collapse at a nightclub killed the former Tiger along with over 100 people.

At last report 124 people were killed when the roof of a nightclub fell down on attendees, including Octavio Dotel, a former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. Over his decade-and-a-half long career Dotel played for a total of 13 teams in the major league. He spent the last two years of his run in the Motor City as a Detroit Tiger.

According to a report from the Associated Press, witnesses reported that dust was falling from the ceiling into party-goer's drinks just minutes before the horrific episode took place.

As a performance by merengue singer Rubby Pérez was in progress, the massive roof above the Jet Set nightclub came smashing down on spectators including athletes, political figures and the owner of the club.

The local emergency 911 system was flooded by over 100 calls immediately after the collapse, including from victims trapped under slabs of the massive roof.

Dominican navy and fire service were involved in efforts to rescue victims according to Juan Manuel Méndez who serves as the director of the country's Emergency Operations Center. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

Tributes have been pouring out to the victims, including Octavio Dotel, a native of the Dominican Republic, all over the internet including the Detroit Tigers Facebook Page.
