Mid-Michigan Will See a Rare “Blood Moon” Lunar Eclipse This March
There’s something about looking up at the night sky over Mid-Michigan that makes you feel small, but in the best possible way.
Why Mid-Michigan Missed February’s Solar Eclipse
We missed the year’s first solar eclipse on February 17. That eclipse was visible in places like Antarctica and parts of southern Africa, but not here. Still, we don’t have to wait long for our chance to see celestial wonder right here at home.

In the early morning hours of March 3, 2026, we’ll get a chance to witness something incredible, a total lunar eclipse during the full “worm moon.” It peaks at 6:38 a.m., and while the moon will be setting during totality here in Michigan, we should still catch part of the show before sunrise according to freep.com.

They call it a “blood moon” because the moon turns a deep red or burnt orange as it slips into Earth’s shadow. It happens when the sun, Earth, and moon line up perfectly, and sunlight filters through our atmosphere before reaching the moon. The blues scatter away, and what’s left are those rich red tones. It’s science, sure. But it feels like magic.
When to See the Blood Moon in Michigan
You won’t need to travel far to see the eclipse. In fact, you can see it right here in Genesee County, as long as the skies are clear. You’ll be able to step outside before dawn on March 3 and just look up.
