This is a horrible story. Not one you would expect to read about happening on a farm.

A mid-Michigan farmer has been charged with animal cruelty and abandonment after 71 dead calves were discovered on his property. The person who is being accused is 29-year-old John Montross of Deerfield Township.

The 71 dead calves were found under hay and snow on the Montross farm near Mt Pleasant. To top it off Montross is a member of the Deerfield Township Planning Commission.

If Montross is convicted of the felony...the crime carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Seems like it should be more severe.
