Michigan Ranks In The Top 10 For Drug Problems
Drug use has increased during the pandemic, and Michigan has been one of the states hit hardest by the uptick in drug activity.
Everyone knows that Opioid use has been an issue over the last couple of years in Michigan, but it doesn't look like that is what is fueling the increase right now. The study from Wallet Hub ranged over a number of different metrics, and the results weren't exactly what we wanted to see. Michigan ranks 8th in the country when all of the metrics are put together.
It's not all bad news for Michigan though according to the data in the study.
Sure, nobody wants to be in the top 10 on a list like this but Michigan did post some good numbers as well. When it came to arrests related to drug use, Michigan ranked 48th in the country. So even though there is an increase in usage, more people are seeking help instead of getting arrested for using.
The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services has been on top of the issues that have come out of the pandemic. It's not just drug use that has increased in our state, alcohol abuse has also been going up.
The pandemic has caused so many obvious problems that the increase in drug and alcohol abuse kind of flew under the radar in the beginning. Luckily health officials were smart enough to think about other side effects of being in lockdown could have. That's how they were able to have such accurate information so quickly.
If you or someone you know is struggling with a drug or alcohol problem during the pandemic, you can get resources to help from the MDHHS here.
