Michigan Hunters Divided Over Major Rule Proposal
If you’re a deer hunter in Michigan, there’s a pretty big change on the table, and people are split on it.
What Is Michigan’s Proposed One Buck Rule
The state is considering a “one buck rule,” which would limit hunters to just one antlered deer per season instead of two. The Michigan Natural Resources Commission is expected to vote on it May 13, and if it passes, it would take effect in 2027 according to ABC 12.

Right now, most hunters can take two bucks. Under the proposal, that second opportunity goes away. In the Lower Peninsula, it would also cost more to hunt a buck. A regular license would default to antlerless, and if you want a buck, you’d need a combo license, bumping the price from $20 to $40.
Why the DNR Wants More Antlerless Deer Harvested
The goal is to get more hunters to take does. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, only about 20 percent of hunters harvest an antlerless deer. Michigan has a strong “buck-first” mindset, and this rule is meant to shift that and help balance the herd over time.

But here’s where the debate comes in. The DNR says only 4 to 7 percent of deer harvested each year are second bucks. So even they admit the short-term impact would likely be modest.
Michigan Hunters React to Proposed Rule Change
Some hunters think it’s a smart long-term move that could improve deer populations and hunting overall. Others see it as paying more for less flexibility, without much real change.

Hunters packed a recent meeting to weigh in, some driving hours to be there. Supporters seemed louder, but overall, opinions are clearly divided. Nothing is final yet, but this could be one of the bigger changes to deer hunting in Michigan in years.
