MDOT Assigns the Cutest Names Ever to Its 299 Snowplows

The days of snowplows having boring names like 'Maintenance Vehicle #MDOT-148' are over. Today, all of Michigan's approximately 300 plow trucks have been given fun (and creative) names which you can view on the Michigan Department of Transportation's website.

Last year, MDOT debuted the contest, inviting residents across the state to submit their name suggestions. All in all, 15,400 name suggestions were submitted and MDOT employees were tasked with sifting through the entries to find the best ones.

What Are Some of The Best Names?

Some of the winning suggestions have real local or regional appeal, like 'Detroit SnoWings' which pays tribute to Michigan's beloved hockey team. Good old Michigan Rock and Roll is honored with 'Kid Rock Salt,' a name assigned to a plow in the Metro Detroit region.

Beloved actress Betty White has been immortalized on a Michigan plow truck that now bears the name 'Betty Whiteout.'

There's even one for the tech enthusiasts, as 'Ctrl Salt Delete' is now assigned to a truck in the Southwest region of the state.

Why Are Michigan Snowplows Being Given Fun Names?

Nick Schirripa helped coordinate the project for MDOT. He tells the Detroit Free Press that it's a way of honoring the snowplow drivers who are the unsung heroes working tirelessly during Michigan's brutal winters.

"It is a lot of fun," he said. "But one of the biggest drivers internally for me was that this is a great way to humanize a group of folks in our agency who really don't get enough attention, and who really go unnoticed, and are often taken for granted. And that's our snowplow drivers, our maintenance workers, who I believe, and a lot of us believe, are absolute rock stars, they are superheroes."

While names won't be painted on each individual truck, the new names will be visible on MDOT's website which shows the location of each truck while they're out working.
