Lou Whitaker was passed over again for the Baseball Hall of Fame but will still be honored next year.  The Tigers have announced his No. 1 will be retired in 2020.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers announced that Whitaker's number 1 will be retired in a ceremony on August 29th against the Boston Red Sox.   His retired number will be the 9th number retired by the Tigers in their history.

Whitaker wore number 1 for the Tigers from 1978 to 1995.   In 19 seasons with the team, he won the World Series in 1984, was a 5 time all star, won 3 gold gloves, 4 Silver Slugger Awards and the Rookie of the Year in 1978.

He was on the Modern Era Committee ballot for the Hall of Fame and missed out with only six votes of the 12 needed for election.

Lou is still is eligible but he will have to wait until the next time the committee votes which is in 2022.

It will be great to finally see him on the wall at Comerica Park.  Let's hope we will eventually see him in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
