A massive recall has been issued for more than 63,000 Jeep Cherokees due to a defect that can cause the vehicle to suddenly lose power, potentially putting the driver and passengers in life-threatening danger.

As a proud Jeep Cherokee owner, my interest is always piqued when I see recalls that could affect my vehicle - and while my vehicle is within the parameters of the vehicles being recalled, I'm hopeful that I'm one of the lucky ones.

What Jeeps Are Being Recalled?

The recall affects certain 2017 to 2019 Jeep Cherokees. Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has made the recall because of a defect that could potentially cause the vehicle to lose power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The notice, posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, also indicates that the defect could potentially impede parking.

"A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. A loss of park function can cause an unintended vehicle rollaway, which can increase the risk of a crash or injury."

Not all 2017 to 2019 Jeep Cherokee models are being recalled.

What is the Nature of the Defect?

According to CBS, the problem is centered around a poorly seated input shaft ring. This could cause the car's power transfer unit to become damaged and disengage the transmission and differential. If this occurs, it could cause a sudden loss of power or loss of a reliable park function.

The loss of power could potentially cause the driver to lose power and a loss of park functionality could cause an unattended vehicle to roll away while parked.

Recall notices will be mailed to owners on February 13. So far, no injuries or deaths have been reported due to this defect.
