Were Moldy Ding Dongs Sold in Michigan?
Pay attention when packing a lunch as a popular snack cake is under a national recall. Some Hostess Ding Dongs sold in the U.S. are being recalled over concerns the snack cakes may be contaminated with mold.
Hostess Ding Dongs Recall: Which Products Are Affected?
The recall was issued by J.M. Smucker Co., the parent company of Hostess, for select lots of the Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Single Serve, the Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong, and the Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Family Pack.

The notice was shared by food distributor and grocery operator SpartanNash which lists affected products with “best by” dates from August 30 through September 3, 2025.
What Consumers Should Do
What's startling about the recall is that it wasn’t immediately clear which states or retailers received the recalled Ding Dongs. They may or may not have been sold in Michigan, so consumers are urged to check packaging dates and avoid eating any of the recalled Ding Dongs.
Company Responds to Recall
In a statement, J.M. Smucker said, “We are committed to your health and safety, and we follow best practices to ensure the quality and safety of the products we sell. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.” The company also confirmed that no other products manufactured by J.M. Smucker are impacted by the issue.
Why Mold Contamination Matters
Mold on food isn’t something to take lightly. According to the FDA, certain molds can produce “mycotoxins,” poisonous substances that may cause illness. Depending on the type of mold, reactions can occur right away or be delayed.

Medical experts also caution against trying to salvage moldy food by simply cutting away the visible mold. Even if the surface looks cleaner, harmful substances could still remain.
