Wait, What? Michigan Might Legalize Raw Milk
I’ll be honest, I had no idea selling raw milk was even illegal in Michigan, but it is. Basically, the state doesn’t allow it because it’s not pasteurized, which means it hasn’t been heated to kill off bacteria like salmonella or E. coli. I knew it had to go through a process before consumption, but I didn’t realize it was downright illegal.
Now lawmakers want to change that. According to Fox 2 Detroit, they’ve introduced bills that would finally let farmers sell raw milk straight to people instead of making everyone go through those weird herd share programs. That’s where you “own” part of a cow and get milk from it, kind of like a milk membership club. I’m not entirely sure how it works, it’s a little outside my world.
Michigan Raw Milk Bill Could Change Farm Sales
So here's the deal: the new plan wouldn’t allow grocery stores to sell it, but farmers could sell it right off the farm. There’d still be some rules that they'd have to follow, like keeping bacteria levels in check and slapping labels on the bottles to warn people that it’s unpasteurized and not inspected by the state.
Some folks think it’s too risky, others say it’s about time adults get to decide what they drink. The bill’s sitting in committee right now, and if it passes, Michigan farmers could have a whole new way to sell their milk.

The whole thing seems weird to me and honestly kind of grosses me out. I’ve spent my entire life hating milk. It’s fine if it’s mixed into food, but the thought of drinking a glass of it straight or worse right from the tap makes me gag a little. You people go enjoy your raw milk...I’ll stick to water.
