Consumers Energy Plans Another Michigan Rate Hike Just Days After Approval
If it feels like your electric bill just keeps going up…you’re not crazy. It is.
Consumers Energy just got approval for a $277 million rate hike that kicks in May 1. Obviously, that didn’t sit well with customers, but at least it’s out there now and not something that just shows up on your bill out of nowhere. Doesn’t make it hurt any less, but here we are.
Now here’s the part that’s going to tick people off.

Consumers Energy Wants Another Rate Hike Already?
Just one week later, they’re already planning to ask for ANOTHER rate increase. How is this even possible?
According to ABC 12, they’ve already filed notice with the Michigan Public Service Commission, saying another rate hike request is coming in early June. No exact number yet, but officials are already expecting it to be another big one.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is calling the whole thing out, saying the system is basically broken and customers are stuck in a never-ending cycle of paying more.
And honestly…she’s not wrong. Not one bit.
How Much More Are Michigan Customers Paying for Electricity?
Since 2020, nearly $800 million in rate increases have been approved. Meanwhile, a lot of people are just trying to keep up with their bills as it is.
Why Is Consumers Energy Asking for Another Rate Hike Already?
Consumers Energy says the hikes are needed to improve the grid and cut down on outages. That’s exactly what they said last time. They also claim that doing smaller increases more often is better than hitting customers with massive spikes every few years.
Come on…a rate hike is a rate hike, and it all adds up over time.
The next one wouldn’t even take effect until 2027, and there will be a long review process with public input. I think they already know exactly how people feel about this.
At some point, enough is enough.
