Detroit Tigers To Retire Jim Leyland’s Number This Summer

The Detroit Tigers have announced they will retire the No. 10 jersey of former manager Jim Leyland on August 3, 2024, at Comerica Park.

This honor comes just weeks after Leyland's induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 21st.

Leyland's managerial career spanned over three decades, with his most successful stint coming in Detroit from 2006 to 2013.

During his eight-years with the Tigers, he had a 700-597 record, leading the team to two American League pennants and three division titles.

Leyland's impact was immediate, he transformed a 71-91 team into a 95-game winner in his inaugural season, guiding the Tigers to their first World Series appearance since 1984.

Prior to his time in Detroit, Leyland managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1986 to 1996, winning three consecutive division titles from 1990 to 1992.

He also led the Florida Marlins to a World Series championship in 1997.

He also had a one-year stint with the Colorado Rockies in 1999.

Leyland's accomplishments go beyond his impressive stats, as he has long been revered as one of baseball's most respected figures.

His 1,769 career wins rank 18th in MLB history, and his induction into the Pirates Hall of Fame further solidifies his legacy.

My wife and I got the chance to meet Jim Leyland at an Otters game when I lived in Evansville, Indiana.

We got the chance to chat  and despite his gruff appearance he was very nice and kind.
