Michigan Couple Scammed Out of $20K—Then Got It Back
It’s happening more frequently: someone clicks the wrong link or responds to a convincing email, and thousands of dollars vanish. That’s exactly what happened to a Michigan couple who fell victim to a phishing scam after receiving an email that appeared to come from a computer anti-virus subscription service.
How the Scam Happened
The scammers then sent someone posing as a courier to the couple’s home in St. Johns to collect $20,000 in cash.
But in a rare win for scam victims, police were able to recover the stolen money thanks to quick action and a bit of luck. According to WSYM-TV, investigators traced the scam to a home in Southeast Michigan. While two suspects have been identified, no arrests have been made.
