Detroit Pizza Joint Picked as One of the Nation’s ‘Best Pizza Places’

A Detroit pizza spot you may never have heard of is enjoying some national love as it lands on the New York Times' list of the 22 Best Pizza Places in the US.

Amar Pizza is located in Hamtramck and its owners are thrilled to take home the honor.

The New York Times released its list of the 22 Best Pizza Places in the United States on Tuesday (6/25) in an article which can only be accessed by paid subscribers.

Owner Khurshed Ahmed told the publication that the use of Bangladeshi ingredients sets Amar apart from other pizzerias in the area.

"We’re in a neighborhood where there are pizzerias that had been around 20 to 30 years, he said. "We had to come up with something unique, to separate us."

He went on to tell the Detroit Free Press that he's "ecstatic, thrilled, and honored" for the recognition.

"All of the years of hard work is getting recognized," Khurshed said. "This is big."

The shop is located at 12195 Jos. Campau Ave. in Hamtramack. There's another location (owned by another family member) at 3728 Rochester Road in Troy.

What's on the Menu?

Amar's online menu boasts many standard options including deep dish and Chicago-style deep dish options.

There are also some interesting specialty-pizza options, including a 'Ghost Pizza' with ghost pepper sauce and 'extreme heat.' It's accompanied by a warning that says 'eat at your own risk.'

There are also BBQ pizza options, a Philly steak pizza, and a seafood option with shrimp, crab meat, and a cajun crust.
