Fenton & Baldwin Roundabout Opens, Genesee County Now Has 14

If you've been waiting for a major construction nightmare in Genesee County to come to an end, the wait is finally over.

14 Genesee County Roundabouts You Can Use Right Now

There are now officially 14 completed and open roundabouts in the county, and at least one more officially in the pipeline. The newest roundabout opened shortly after noon today at Fenton and Baldwin Roads. Construction started in April, and the Genesee County Road Commission has confirmed that it in now open to motorists.

And yes, I went through the county road commission records and transportation documents to separate the actual roundabouts from intersections that were merely studied as possible locations.

When Did Genesee County's Roundabout Revolution Begin?

The county's roundabout history goes back to 2015, when Hill and Elms became the first. Kittelson's national roundabout database also lists the newer Genesee County locations, including Lapeer/Oak and Morrish/Lennon.

And there's an important correction here: Hill and Elms is one roundabout, not two. Some databases show slightly different opening years, which is where the higher counts floating around online can get confusing.

Future Genesee County Roundabouts Being Planned

GCRC is also working toward a roundabout at Elms Road and Lennon Road. That project is still in the design phase, with construction proposed for spring or summer 2027. The estimated cost is about $1.6 million, with funding coming primarily from federal money, GCRC and Clayton Township.

If everything moves forward, Genesee County could soon have 15 roundabouts. And judging by how much people love them, hate them, or have absolutely no idea who's supposed to yield inside them, I'm sure we'll be talking about them for years to come.
