Genesee County Roundabouts: Love Them or Hate Them?
Roundabouts have been multiplying across Genesee County like weeds since 1999. While some drivers appreciate the smoother traffic flow, many Michiganders dread them. If you know how to navigate a roundabout, they can improve safety and efficiency—but countless drivers have no clue how to handle them, which often sparks extra road rage.
The History of Roundabouts
The concept of circular traffic junctions dates back centuries. The first circular junction appeared in Letchworth Garden City, Great Britain, in 1909. The modern roundabout, as we know it today, was standardized in the United Kingdom in 1966.

Early American experiments with circular intersections included designs in Washington, D.C., in the 1790s and New York City in 1905. Yet, the first true operational roundabout in the U.S. wasn’t built until 1990 in Summerlin, Nevada. Michigan followed in 1999, installing its first roundabout in Oakland County.
Michigan’s First Roundabouts
Genesee County embraced the trend in 2015 with its first roundabout at Hill and Elms Roads in Mundy Township. Since then, these circular intersections have spread throughout the county. While modern driver education covers roundabout navigation, many residents remain unsure how to approach them safely.
How to Navigate a Roundabout Safely
Here’s a quick guide: when approaching a roundabout, yield to traffic already in the circle. If it’s clear, proceed without hesitation—don’t stall and frustrate the car behind you. Mastering this simple routine makes commuting faster, safer, and less stressful for everyone.
While more and more roundabouts are being planned for construction in the near future, one proposed roundabout project was recently shut down by the City of Burton after complaints from residents.
