Michigan Cyclosporiasis Cases Continue To Climb

As Michigan's cyclosporiasis outbreak keeps growing, with more than 3,700 cases statewide and 85 right here in Genesee County, some local restaurants are taking matters into their own hands.

Burton's Tía Helita's has temporarily pulled lettuce, cabbage, cilantro, and a few menu favorites that depend on those ingredients. The owners say they haven't had anyone get sick, but they'd rather be overly cautious than take any chances with their customers. And customers seem to appreciate it. Instead of complaining about missing toppings, many are thanking the restaurant for putting safety first.

More Genesee County Restaurants Are Changing Their Menus

That decision is also spreading to other local businesses according to ABC 12. Vasquez Food in Flint has stopped serving taco salads and is leaving lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, and salsa off certain menu items until health officials give the all-clear.

Both restaurants say they're simply trying to protect their customers while Michigan works to identify exactly where the contaminated greens came from. So if your taco seems a little lighter than usual, it's not a mistake, it's a precaution.
