This is a VERY SERIOUS illness and so far, three cases have been reported in Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is warning residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites after three cases of California encephalitis have been confirmed in humans.

One of them is right here in Genesee County; the others are in Berrien and Kalamazoo. Six more cases have been confirmed in Michigan horses.

It's one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne illnesses with a mortality rate of 33%. Symptoms include fever, chills, body and joint aches.

Take precautions: wear bug spray, get rid of any standing-water outside of your house, wear long pants and shirts and make sure your window screens are in tact.
