These Genesee County Police Dogs Just Got a Major Safety Boost
Dogs are always referred to as “man’s best friend.” They’re loyal, they’re smart, and honestly, they’ll do just about anything for their human. And when it comes to police K9s, that bond goes even further.

These dogs are trained to jump into action at a moment’s notice, whether it’s tracking someone down, searching an area, or backing up their partner in a dangerous situation. But the reality is, that also puts them right in the middle of some pretty serious situations. And that’s why this is actually really cool to see locally.
Genesee County K9s Receive New Protective Vests
WJRT reports that two Genesee County Sheriff’s Office K9s, Bailey and Kolt, just got a pretty big safety upgrade. They were both given bullet and stab protective vests, which is something you hope they never need, but you definitely want them to have.

These weren’t just handed out randomly either. They were donated through a nonprofit called Vested Interest in K9s, which focuses on getting protective gear to police dogs all across the country. In this case, someone out in Massachusetts stepped up and sponsored the vests.

And these things are legit. They’re custom fit for each dog, made in the U.S., and certified to the same kind of standards you’d expect for protective gear. They weigh a few pounds, so it’s not nothing. But for what they do, it’s a pretty small trade-off for that kind of protection.

What’s wild is just how big this program has gotten. Since 2009, they’ve handed out more than 6,000 of these vests to K9s across all 50 states. And when you think about it, there are around 30,000 police dogs out there nationwide, so there’s still a lot of need.
Why Protective Gear Matters for Police Dogs
At the end of the day, these dogs are out there doing the same dangerous work as their human partners. So anything that helps keep them safer just makes sense.

And yeah, hopefully Bailey and Kolt never actually need those vests. But if they do, at least now they’ve got that extra layer of protection.
