For Her Birthday, Flint Woman Organizes Walk to Honor Harriet Tubman – The Good News
The walk is part of a national movement called GirlTrek.
Delores Johnson wanted to do something different for her 58th birthday, so she organized a two-mile-long walk starting downtown at the Genesee County Circuit Court building in honor of Harriet Tubman's passing.
The walk included about 30 women and made it all the way to Woodside Church. GirlTrek is an advocacy organization that promotes Black women's health and wellness.
137 Black women die each day from being overweight, so the walk also promoted fitness for women. Johnson wants to inspire women to take care of themselves. And this isn't just a one-day event; they meet at the Farmers Market during the summer and at the mall at 8:30 AM to walk.
Happy Birthday, Dolores!
