Flint Couple Nomianted for Governor’s Fitness Awards for Crim Training Program – The Good News
Well deserved! Congratulations, Dorie and Brian!
If you've participated in the Crim Training Program at any point in the last 20 years, you know how great it is to prepare casual runners and walkers for the 10-mile-race. And you also probably know Brian and Dorie Barkey.
The Barkeys have been working with the training program since 1996 and, because of them, participation has grown more than 10 times over. And they're being recognized by the state of Michigan because of it - they are finalists for the Governor's Fitness Award - Perennial Award.
According to the Michigan Fitness Foundation's website, this award "recognizes seasoned citizens who maintain an active lifestyle, combined with healthy eating to enhance overall wellness."
Meet Governor's Fitness Awards - Perennial Award finalist, Brian and Dorie Barkey. In ‘96, Brian joined the Crim Festival of Races as a group leader and volunteer coordinator. Dorie joined Crim directing their Training Program. Under their leadership, the program grew 10 times over and was recognized as the largest training program for a single event in the world.
Since then, they’ve been committed to hosting community walking and running groups and have also created community through social media They believe in supporting others, so they do not have to be alone in their personal quest for fitness. The Barkeys also have a deep sense of service to their community and volunteer for organizations that seek to improve lives in Genesee County. They are true community champions.
