Serious allegations involving Cesar Chavez are now having a direct impact here in Mid-Michigan. After a report published by The New York Times outlined claims that Chavez abused two girls and fellow labor leader Dolores Huerta decades ago, a major local event has been canceled.

Why The Flint Event Was Canceled

MLive is reporting that the Latinx Technology & Community Center in Flint has officially called off its annual Chavez and Huerta Luncheon, which was scheduled for March 28. Executive Director Asa Zuccaro says the decision did not come lightly. At first, there was discussion about possibly moving forward and shifting the focus of the event. But ultimately, the conclusion was that holding it at all would not be appropriate right now.

In a statement, Zuccaro made it clear that celebrating “unsung heroes” is not possible when allegations of this magnitude are hanging over that history. Instead, the organization says it wants to pause, reflect, and create space for honest conversations, healing, and accountability.

The Cesar Chavez Foundation has also responded, saying it is shocked and saddened by what is being reported. The foundation says it is working alongside the United Farm Workers to create a confidential process for anyone who may have been harmed to come forward and be heard.

Flint’s Historical Connection To Chavez

Locally, there is also a shift in focus toward Dolores Huerta, recognizing not just her leadership, but what her experience represents. Zuccaro pointed out that her story is a reminder of how often women’s voices have been overlooked, even within movements built on justice.

What Happens Next For The Community

For now, the Latinx Center says it is moving away from event planning and toward community care, with plans to host spaces for dialogue and healing in the coming weeks.

And here is where this hits even closer to home. Flint has a long-standing connection to Chavez. The city was actually the first in the country to name a street after him back in 1987. As of now, there is no word on whether that could change.
