It was a split-second decision that stopped a gunman from wreaking havoc and taking lives at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, just outside Detroit, last month. Now, the church deacon who helped stop the attack is being honored with a special gift — a brand-new Ford F-150 to replace the truck that was destroyed during the incident.

Detroit-Area Deacon Uses Truck to Stop Gunman at Church

Richard Pryor has been dubbed a hero after using his truck to stop the gunman from entering the building on June 22. Pryor has been gifted a 2025 F-150 PowerBoost on a two-year lease, courtesy of Demmer Ford, located less than two miles from the church.

Pryor was the first to spot the shooter that Sunday morning, knowing something wasn’t right when he saw the man in fatigues pulling a weapon from his vehicle. Acting fast, Pryor hit the gas, running over the gunman and putting himself directly in harm’s way.

“He shot a round through the truck, and in those few seconds, I realized the truck was dead and I didn’t have a weapon on me,” Pryor told Detroit’s WXYZ-TV.

Church Security Takes Down Shooter After Deacon’s Heroic Act

Armed security guards took down the shooter, though he continued firing at the church and Pryor’s 2018 F-150 from the ground.

Pryor’s quick thinking likely spared numerous lives, but the truck he relied on for work was left totaled.

Local Ford Dealership Gifts New Truck to Hero Deacon

That’s when the local Ford dealership stepped in, gifting Pryor the lease of a brand-new truck.

“I can’t be more than enough thankful for everybody’s support — the Lord was definitely involved in the events of that Sunday,” said Pryor. “Everything that’s transpired afterward, and how everybody’s reached out — Jack Demmer, Ford — it’s been more than expected. I can’t be more appreciative. Just thank you to everybody.”
