Search for Two Missing Michigan Snowmobilers Ends in Tragedy
What began as a late-night search for two missing snowmobilers ended in heartbreak Sunday morning. According to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, the bodies of two Grand Haven men, ages 65 and 49, were recovered from the icy waters of Round Lake in Sheridan Township. The men were reported missing around 12:30 a.m. after family members had not heard from them for several hours.
How the Overnight Search Unfolded
Early information suggested the pair may have been snowmobiling on trail systems in Lake County, prompting deputies there to begin searching the area. As the search continued without success, efforts expanded into eastern Mason County around 4:30 a.m.

That’s when a searcher discovered snowmobile tracks leading onto the ice of Round Lake off Sugar Grove Road. Investigators say there were no tracks coming back off the lake, raising immediate concern.

Because of darkness and heavy snowfall, crews were unable to fully check the lake overnight and paused until daylight. At first light, responders spotted what appeared to be a snowmobile helmet several hundred yards offshore on the ice.
Dangerous Conditions Faced by Rescuers
Once weather conditions allowed, a drone was launched and revealed a hole in the ice next to the helmet. Rescue attempts were extremely dangerous, with responders repeatedly falling through thin ice. An airboat was used to help crews move safely across the surface.

Recovery Efforts on Round Lake
Both men were recovered from approximately six feet of water. Two snowmobiles were also found submerged beneath the ice. Numerous local, state, and federal agencies assisted in the recovery effort.
Authorities are reminding the public that ice conditions can change quickly and become deadly, even during peak winter recreation season.
