If you’ve ever gone winter camping, you know the drill. You pile on the longjohns, ski socks, fleeces, windbreakers, mittens, neck gaiter, maybe even goggles, and head out into the frozen beauty of Michigan winter. It’s awesome… until you’re done for the day and everything you’re wearing is cold, damp, and smells like campfire smoke.

Why This Is a Big Deal for Michigan's Winter Campers

Now imagine this: you unzip the tent or camper, stomp the snow off your boots, and instead of heating water on a stove or calling it an early night, you walk into a real bathroom with heat, and an actual hot shower. How cool is this?!?

For the first time ever at a Michigan state park, winter campers can enjoy that luxury at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula. A brand-new, year-round modern bathroom is now open in the Lower Falls Hemlock Loop, giving winter campers something that feels almost illegal in the cold months: running hot water in February.

MLive reports that the old bathroom dated back to the 1950s and is now gone, replaced with an insulated, four-season facility that officially makes winter camping a whole different experience. Park staff say winter camping has been growing in popularity for years, and adding heated showers is only going to bring in more adventurous campers, especially those who love the idea of roughing it just a little less.

Where You Can Camp and What’s Open

The Hemlock Loop sits about a mile from the Lower Falls and right near the Tahquamenon River, with access to hiking trails and snowmobile routes literally across the street. Snowmobilers can even ride straight into their campsite.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go Winter Camping in Michigan

There are 30 snowplowed campsites available all winter, and while reservations aren’t required, they’re strongly encouraged. Just remember: bring a shovel, extra propane, and check your camper’s cold-weather rating. Fill and dump stations won’t reopen until mid-May.
