What’s Happening? Kid, 17, Arrested For Latest SE Michigan School Issue

Parents, teachers and faculty in Genesee County school districts have had their share of headaches over the last month.

What happened in Davison Schools?

• A high schooler allegedly kicked a middle schooler's head through a bus window.  See that story here. The amount of force one needs to break through a school bus window is brutal.

What happened in Atherton Schools?

• Multiple iPhone "Air Drop" threats of violence closed schools in the last 30 days. Following the return to classes -- another threat was made.  While the district is working with authorities to identify who was using iPhone's "Air Drop" feature to give multiple threats over the last few weeks, a new decision was made in the interest of safety.

What happened in Grand Blanc Schools?

• GB High School students were sent home after students shared news of a threat received via Tik Tok. Social media parent & community groups got wind of the news as the school started investigating. Eventually HS students were sent home. That situation is still being investigated.

What happened in Carmen Ainsworth Schools?

• CA Schools received a bomb threat in early September. An adult woman has been charged in that situation, just this week. That story is worth seeing, here.

Just to our south around Metro Detroit, a suburban school district is dealing with an entirely different, creepy and disgusting type of issue.

What happened at North Farmington High School in Farmington Hills?

• A 17-year-old student has been arrested for allegedly posting pictures of female classmates on a porn site. This happened on Monday 11/07/22. Farmington Hills Police Chief, Jeff King, told WXYZ-TV the pics were "nonsexual in nature or 'normal' photos." Trouble is, they were taken on campus or lifted from social media accounts.

In each of these situations, superintendents are pleading with parents and students to talk about the serious consequences of these threats & actions. Remember, many of these threats are federal-level investigations/offenses. These incidents are not "senior prank" level from the 1980s... they're much worse. In Michigan and around the US, school shootings have parents, teachers, faculty and emergency services on edge.

The time and methods used to investigate put parents on edge. Often, demanding more from school officials who can't comment or provide any additional information until a federal investigation is completed. While those hours & days feel like "forever," it's imperative to get it right -- to protect students & staff from more senseless stress and worse yet, death.
