There's a ton of much-needed road work that needs to get done before the snow flies in Michigan. Unfortunately, it always seems to happen in the most inconvenient way. I don't know why they can't fix one problem and then move on to the next. It seems like they start multiple projects at the same time which ultimately creates a massive headache for commuters.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will close and detour the US-23 ramps at Silver Lake, North, and Torrey roads to complete bridge repairs starting today. See what I mean? Too many projects at once. They're also planning overnight closures on Silver Lake Road and North Road to accommodate US-23 bridge demolition.
The road work is part of a $12.3 million investment in significant bridge improvements to 16 structures along the I-75/US-23 corridor through Genesee County. Work includes steel beam repairs, deck replacements, and protective epoxy coating. Most work is expected to be complete this year. Again, I said most.

These are the traffic restrictions that we're looking at:

  • Beginning today all ramps at US-23/Silver Lake Road and US-23/North Road/Torrey Road will be closed and detoured. Traffic will also be shifted toward the median to allow work on the overpass.
  • From August 16 to 21, drivers should expect Silver Lake Road and North Road to be closed at US-23 during overnight hours (8 p.m. 4 a.m.) while bridge demolition is completed.
  • Following the Labor Day holiday weekend, drivers should expect lane closures on US-23 from Silver Lake Road to the Shiawassee River bridge and also south of Hill Road at the Swartz Creek bridge. These lane closures will be in place through November.
As I said, it's going to suck.
I'm dealing with a detour on my commute to and from work and it's a real pain. I have to drive through a large neighborhood to get to the adjoining roads that I need to get to and from work. I'm sure it pisses off the people that live there because there's so much traffic now on their streets where the kids are riding their bikes and playing.
