The Silver Muzzle Cottage in Elk River takes in old, sick dogs and allows them to live out their glory days.

It never ceases to amaze me - how people can just discard a lifelong pet, simply because they're getting older. Of course, there are exceptions to this, especially if the owner is sick themselves. But never fear - the Silver Muzzle Cottage is here for those senior fur babies.

Owner Kim Skarritt started the rescue two years ago, after realizing that a lot of people will give their senior dogs up for adoption or, even worse, abandon them. The rescue, which is about 15 miles north of Traverse City, has taken in around 70 dogs so far. Most of them are old, quite a few are in their last days. But Kim wants to make sure they live it to the fullest.

They take dogs that are 10-years-old and older, or a terminally ill dog at any age.
