West Nile Virus Detected in Mid-Michigan Mosquitoes
If it feels like the mosquitoes have been especially bad lately, you're not imagining things.
West Nile Virus Found in Bay County

Before anyone starts canceling outdoor plans, officials say the risk of infection remains low. Most people who become infected never develop symptoms. Those who do may experience headaches, fatigue, or other mild flu-like symptoms. In rare cases, more serious neurological illnesses can occur.
Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Creates Perfect Mosquito Conditions
The discovery comes after weeks of heavy rain and flooding across parts of Michigan, creating ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Mosquito Control officials say residents can expect mosquito populations to increase over the next two to three weeks as standing water continues to provide breeding grounds for new mosquitoes.

To help get ahead of the problem, crews will be treating mosquito breeding sites throughout the county and conducting targeted nighttime fogging operations to reduce adult mosquito populations. Residents are also being asked to do their part by eliminating standing water around their homes. Bird baths, buckets, flower pots, old tires, and kiddie pools can all become mosquito nurseries when water is allowed to sit.
How Residents Can Protect Themselves
If you're spending time outdoors, especially around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, officials recommend wearing long sleeves and using an EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
