West Nile Virus Prompts Mosquito Control in Michigan Community

Due to a recent case of West Nile Virus, a community in Genesee County is implementing steps to control the mosquito population.

Genesee County's West Nile History

In September of last year the Genesee County Health Department announced a third confirmed case of West Nile Virus. That third case was contracted by a resident of Burton.

Now the City of Burton has invested $153,700 from their general fund to execute steps for mosquito control measures throughout the city.

APM Mosquito Control's Role

A local company called APM Mosquito Control has been selected by the city to execute the mosquito abatement plan, which was approved unanimously approved by the Burton City Council.

The company has already 115 woodland pool breeding sites along with other hotspots in the city of Burton.

Controlling Mosquitoes in Genesee County

APM Mosquito Control may be new to Burton, but they have been assisting 35 different Michigan communities with their services, including including Fenton, Fenton Township, Linden, Montrose, Montrose Township and Mundy Township. As a resident of Mundy Township I can say that these programs do help quite a bit.

While the company is underway with the program across the city of Burton the actual spraying of chemicals won't start until sometime in May.

Burton's Mosquito Spraying Schedule

APM General Manager Ben Seago said, “I’m looking at 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. roughly, targeting Sunday nights. There’s less foot traffic and construction, and work traffic obviously is a factor as well.”

Residents that would like to be notified in advance of spraying can call APM Mosquito Control at 810-766-9423 and get added to the alert list. Burton residents can also opt out of the program by filling out a form on the City of Burton's website.
