Surveillance Video Captures Gas Line Explosion in Tyrone Township [VIDEO]
One day after a gas line exploded near US 23 in Tyrone Township, authorities are investigating the blast.
No injuries were reported after the explosion that happened just before 9:30 Wednesday (3/16) morning. The blast occurred at Runyan Lake Road, north of Center Road in Tyrone Township, shutting down both directions of US 23 and Old US 23 for several hours.
Surveillance video of the explosion, captured by a nearby business, is included in the video clip below.
Explosion Observed From a Nearby Business
Dennis Husse is the general manager of Tyrone Hills Golf Club. He could see the aftermath of the explosion from his office window. He shared the video with WJBK-TV and said he initially thought a semi-truck had blown a couple of tires on the nearby expressway.
"I looked out the north window and all of a sudden I see all this brown, billowing smoke," Husse said. "And then that subsided but it was pretty intense there for a bit."
What Actually Exploded?
According to Consumers Energy and the Fenton Township Fire Department, a pipe measuring 18 to 22 inches in diameter burst, leaving a crater that's about 20 feet deep. Debris from the explosion flew onto the highway damaging some passing vehicles. However, no motorists were injured in the blast.
"Multiple cars have damage to them. I think a Consumers truck has damage," said Ryan Voilz with the Fenton Fire Department. "One car parked down there with damage, and another one parked up there with damage."
The incident remains under investigation.
