Saginaw Police Officers Investigated After Arrest Video

A social media video showing Saginaw Police officers repeatedly hitting a woman during an arrest is now the subject of multiple investigations.

Saginaw Police Dispatched After Reports of Multiple Fights

The incident happened shortly after midnight Sunday outside Rita's Southern Soul Cafe on Washington Avenue in downtown Saginaw. Police had reportedly been called to the area after multiple fights broke out during a reunion being held at the business.

Video circulating on social media appears to show two Saginaw Police officers striking a woman while attempting to take her into custody. However, the video does not show what happened before the confrontation, and that is now part of the investigation.

Woman Arrested After Downtown Saginaw Incident

The woman was arrested for resisting, assaulting and obstructing police. She has since been released while the investigation continues according to ABC 12.

Her attorney, Ven Johnson Law, has identified her as Stephanie Anderson. Anderson reportedly received medical attention following the incident. Another man was also arrested and later released pending further investigation.

Michigan State Police Investigating Saginaw Officers

A Saginaw Police officer and a sergeant have been placed on administrative duty while the department conducts an internal review. Administrative duty means the officers continue working but are removed from road patrol.

Michigan State Police are also conducting a separate investigation. Once completed, their findings will be turned over to the Saginaw County Prosecutor's Office, which will determine whether criminal charges are appropriate.

Saginaw Mayor Says She Is Appalled

Saginaw Mayor Brenda Moore says she was “appalled” by what she saw in the video, although she says officials must wait for all the facts before reaching conclusions. Meanwhile, the Saginaw Police Officers Association says it fully supports the officers involved.

The incident is also expected to draw significant public comment as Saginaw City Council prepares to hear from residents concerned about what happened.
