Of the almost 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, 16 had ties to Michigan. Only one was from the Flint area -- Eric Bennett.

Kearsley High School class of 1989 graduate Eric Bennett was killed in the World Trade Center as he worked on the 102nd floor of the North Tower. He was vice-president for Alliance Consulting Group.

Bennett, who also played football for Ferris State, was reportedly leading a staff meeting on the 102nd floor when the plane struck the north tower between the 91st and 98th floors. The impact left Bennett along with others trapped above the contact area and unable to escape. Six months later some of Eric's remains were found and laid to rest.

Both Kearsley High School and Ferris State University present awards in Eric's honor every year in hopes of keeping his legacy alive and making sure that we never forget.
