Plans are underway to make Flint's Bishop International Airport a large-scale, drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

According to Mlive,  Genesee County and Bishop Airport official are looking for approval by the county Board of Commissioners at the upcoming meeting on Wednesday, February 17th. If a memorandum of agreement is given, the clinic at the airport could be up and running as soon as vaccine doses can be secured.

“We do not have knowledge of a specific time frame for a vaccine increase but are taking these steps in planning to be ready when supply does increase", Dr. Pamela Hackert, the county’s chief medical officer, told MLive-The Flint Journal.

According to Mlive, officials expect to utilize the airport’s economy parking lot, across Bristol Road from the terminal building, for the drive-thru clinic. This would give the opportunity to vaccinate 1,500 to 2,000 people in a single day. As of last week, the pre-registered waiting list at the Health Department for a vaccine had grown to more than 50,000.

The Health Department has worked tirelessly to hold smaller clinics in locations such as churches over the past few weeks to administer vaccines to teachers, as well as  hospitals hosting their own clinics for frontline workers.
