Federal Shutdown Creating Stress and Delays at Michigan Airports
The federal government shutdown, now entering its second week, is starting to take a toll on Michigan’s airports as essential workers continue to report for duty without pay. From Detroit Metro to Flint Bishop, TSA officers and air traffic controllers are feeling the pressure, and travelers are beginning to see the effects.
Shutdown Pressure Building in Michigan’s Skies
At Detroit Metro Airport, the state’s busiest hub, the ripple effects of nationwide staffing shortages are becoming more visible. As of Tuesday morning, DTW reported 31 delays and five cancellations as the FAA confirmed growing absenteeism among air traffic controllers.

While the airport isn’t anticipating major disruptions yet, officials say the situation could worsen if the shutdown drags on. Delays at other major hubs — including Newark, Denver, and Nashville — have already created ripple effects that can impact Detroit’s connecting flights.
TSA Officers Work Without Pay Across Michigan
TSA officers across Michigan are also caught in the middle. Union leaders say that uncertainty over pay is making it harder for employees to stay focused on their already demanding jobs. Gregory Simpkins, who represents TSA officers statewide, recently said in a statement,
They still have to pay the bills and stay laser-focused while keeping passengers safe.
Flint Bishop Airport Could Feel the Ripple Next
At Flint Bishop International Airport, operations remain normal for now, but the concern is growing. The airport depends on regional FAA control centers in Detroit and Cleveland, which could feel the pinch from staffing shortages. TSA officers there are also among the thousands working without pay.

For smaller Michigan airports, the outlook could be even more serious. The Essential Air Service program that subsidizes flights to rural communities will run out of funding within days, threatening routes that connect small towns to major hubs like Detroit.
