Well, Michigan football has had its share of strange headlines over the years, but this one unfolded at record speed. In the span of just a few hours on Wednesday, head coach Sherrone Moore went from preparing for the Citrus Bowl to being fired. Then he found himself sitting in the Washtenaw County Jail while police investigate an alleged assault. Yes, all in the same afternoon.

Police Called to Ann Arbor-Saline Road

Police were called at 4:10 p.m. to an address on Ann Arbor-Saline Road to investigate an alleged assault involving a Michigan football staffer. A suspect, who multiple outlets confirmed was Moore, was detained in Saline and turned over to Pittsfield Township officers.

By 4:43 p.m., while Moore was in custody, the university publicly announced he’d been fired “for cause” after investigators found “credible evidence” he’d had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. By 8:30 p.m., he was officially booked into jail. He is expected to be arraigned today (December 12, 2025).

Staff Blindsided Inside Schembechler

The university had looked into the allegations earlier this fall but reportedly found nothing at the time. Then, in the last 24 hours, new evidence surfaced, enough to end Moore’s contract immediately. Inside Schembechler Hall, staff reportedly learned of the firing just minutes before the public did, and Moore was nowhere near the team meeting where the announcement was made.

What Investigators Still Aren’t Saying

Moore’s two seasons as head coach were already complicated. From the Connor Stalions fallout to a two-game suspension for deleted texts, to a disappointing 9-3 finish this year, his tenure was anything but calm. And now, with police saying very little and no formal charges yet filed, there are more questions than answers.
