Michigan Warned to Avoid Produce From Farm Using Human Waste

Check your produce. A Michigan farm has been busted for fertilizing its crops with raw human waste, which is considered a big no-no by state health inspectors.

Produce From Kuntry Gardens Flagged

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development issued the warning on Monday (10/3), saying residents should not consume produce from Kuntry Gardens in Homer. Homer is located about halfway between Battle Creek and Jackson.

According to Mlive, a routine inspection of the farm revealed the Kuntry Gardens was using raw, untreated human waste to fertilize fields in which produce was being grown. The practice violates Michigan food regulations as well as other state and federal laws.

Produce Distributed to Local Grocery Stores and Via Direct Sales

White Lotus Farms in Ann Arbor had been carrying produce grown by Kuntry Gardens but announced on Instagram that it has severed ties with the grower.

"We will no longer be doing business with them but want to let you know about this [contamination] immediately," the post reads. "If you purchased zucchini, summer squash, tomatoes, or green peppers recently, please throw them out and ask for a refund on your next visit."
