A devastating accident in Muskegon Township claimed the life of a 17-year-old worker who was cutting up a fallen tree. According to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), the teen was discovered by the homeowner with a fatal neck laceration beside the chainsaw he had been using.

Tragic Chainsaw Accident in Muskegon Township

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 22, when the teen was asked by the homeowner to cut up the fallen tree. The youth has not yet been identified. It is unclear at this time whether the teen was working for a tree service or had been contracted independently by the homeowner.

Authorities say the teen was performing the task as part of his employment when the chainsaw, likely due to kickback or improper handling, struck him in the neck. MIOSHA has launched an investigation into the incident, which now marks Michigan’s 14th workplace fatality of 2025, according to People.

Investigation Underway After Teen’s Death

First responders from the Muskegon Township Fire Department, along with officials from the Muskegon County Medical Examiner and local police, responded after the boy was found lying next to the chainsaw.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death and whether any safety protocols were violated.

Chainsaw Safety Reminders from NWCG

The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) has published chainsaw safety guidelines for anyone operating a saw or assisting nearby. Recommendations include wearing proper clothing, protective eyewear and ear protection, and maintaining the proper level of training and certification.
