Michigan “Snobbiest Cities” List Includes Several Genesee County Towns

A recent report revealed the top 100 snobbiest cities in Michigan, and I was shocked to see how many cities in Mid-Michigan made the list, especially in Genesee County. What’s up with that?

I get that in many counties across the state there are rural areas that don’t have a huge population. In some cases, the biggest cities may have just a few hundred, maybe a thousand people. So obviously, the more people you have, the snobbier it gets... maybe?

Why So Many Genesee County Cities Made the List

Based on a recent article from WFMK listing the “Top 100 Snobbiest Cities in Michigan,” I was surprised to see how many were in Mid-Michigan, specifically in Genesee County.

According to the report, Huntington Woods is the snobbiest city in Michigan. I did notice that Frankenmuth made the list at number 28. Then there are six Genesee County communities that made this list.

Where Genesee County Ranks on Michigan’s “Snobbiest” List

Doing some math, we figured that with 83 counties in Michigan, there should be about 1.20 cities per county on the list. But Genesee County has close to 5% of its communities represented, 4.98% to be exact. Does that seem snobby? Probably, especially since my family is included in one of the so-called snobby areas of Genesee County.

What Is a Census-Designated Place in Michigan?

What really surprised me was that Fenton and Lake Fenton made the list separately. I wasn’t sure why, so I reached out to former Flint Journal Editorial Page Director David J. Fenech. He explained something called a 'census-designated place', which would make the Lake Fenton community and the City of Fenton separate in some respects. The same would apply to the Beecher community.
