Cold Case Break: Mt. Morris Township Man Charged in Wife’s Disappearance

An 82-year-old Mt. Morris Township man is now in custody in Illinois, facing a first-degree murder charge tied to the disappearance of his wife more than 37 years ago.

Gilbert Bernal, who has lived in the Flint area for years, was arrested last month by the United States Marshals Service. He was arraigned Monday in Illinois and remains jailed as the case moves forward according to WJRT.

Bernal is accused in the disappearance of his then-wife, Joan Bernal, who was last seen alive on December 9, 1988, at the couple’s home in Joliet, Illinois. Her body has never been found.

Why the Case Against Bernal Went Cold for Decades

Investigators believe a domestic violence incident inside the home led to Joan Bernal’s death. Bernal was first arrested in connection with the case in 1993, but he was released after his attorney claimed multiple people had seen Joan alive after she was reported missing.

What Happens Next in the Illinois Murder Case

Authorities have not said publicly whether new evidence led to the renewed arrest. Bernal was taken into custody on December 11 on Louis Avenue in Mt. Morris Township. He was extradited to Illinois last Friday to face the murder charge.

A neighbor in Mt. Morris Township, who asked not to be identified, described Bernal as friendly and said he was always willing to help others.

In a brief statement, a family member said:

We will continue to fight for our mother and are hopeful she will receive justice. Other than that, no comment at this time.

Bernal is scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing in Illinois on January 12.
