Flint Groom Sentenced After Best Man Killed on Wedding Night
It’s hard to imagine how a wedding night could end any worse than this. What was supposed to be one of the happiest nights of James Shirah’s life instead turned into a tragedy that left a man dead, four children without their father, and two families completely shattered.
Wedding Celebration Turns Deadly in Flint
The case has gotten a lot of attention around Flint because of how unbelievable the details are. Shirah, who had no prior criminal record, was sentenced to 30 to 45 years in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder in the death of his longtime friend and best man, Terry Taylor.

ABC 12 reports that according to testimony, the two had been drinking during the wedding celebration before an argument broke out after the reception. Prosecutors say Shirah left the scene in an SUV, then came back about a minute later and struck Taylor, sending him flying through the air.
Judge Delivers Powerful Message During Sentencing
Throughout the case, the defense argued it wasn’t intentional and described it as a horrible alcohol-fueled incident that spiraled out of control. Prosecutors pushed back, saying Shirah had enough time to think about what he was doing before returning. Judge Khary Hanible delivered a line during sentencing that probably stuck with everyone in the courtroom, telling Shirah:
I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer.
And honestly, that’s what makes this whole thing so difficult to process. This wasn’t some career criminal with a violent history.

This was somebody’s friend, somebody’s husband, somebody who moments earlier had been celebrating a wedding surrounded by family and people he cared about.
Victim’s Family Shares Emotional Impact Statement
During sentencing, Shirah fought back tears and said he would “forever be sorry,” calling Taylor his best friend and accepting responsibility for what happened. Meanwhile, Taylor’s family described arriving at the scene and seeing first responders desperately trying to save him, a memory they said they’ll never forget. Now, instead of remembering a wedding, two families are left remembering a death.
