Michigan-Made Device Protects Students From School Shootings [VIDEO]
Sandy Hook. Virginia Tech. Columbine. Three of the deadliest school shootings in the last 15 years. Between the three of them, 76 souls lost their lives, another 48 were injured. As a nation, we all witnessed the horror together, and the concern for the safety of our children continued to increase.
Anyone can name three school shootings, but can you name each of the 187 that have occurred since 1990? Do you remember the first shooting that happened this century? It happened here in Flint on February 29, 2000 at Buell Elementary School, where a 6-year-old became the youngest school shooter ever when he shot and killed classmate Kayla Rolland.
There were 37 shootings during the 1990s and 52 from 2000-2009. What made me sick when I was doing research for this article was when I learned that there have been 98 school shootings during the 2010s, and we're only half way through the decade. Let me rephrase that... there have been more shootings in the last four years and 9 months than there were during the 20 years span from January of 1990 to December of 2009. Collectively, the 187 shootings since 1990 have killed 266 people and injured 348.
A Michigan man has come up with an invention that could save the lives of students and teachers that find themselves in a potentially deadly situation. The Boot, created by Rob Couturier, was installed in the Reeths-Puffer school district near Muskegon before the start if this school year. Couturier began thinking about the idea when his daughter was being bullied by someone who should not have been on school grounds. It was Sandy Hook that prompted Rob to bring it to life.
See how The Boot works in the video below. As far as I'm concerned, I am sold! I want one of these put on every classroom door in the world. What do you think? Would you want The Boot installed in your kid's classroom?
