If it feels like every time you pull up to a gas pump in Mid-Michigan you’re bracing for bad news, you’re not alone. Prices have been climbing fast, and for a lot of families around Flint, Saginaw, and Lansing, it’s been one more hit on top of already stretched budgets. But finally, there’s a little bit of relief on the way.

How the Executive Order Could Lower Costs

Governor Gretchen Whitmer just signed an executive order declaring an energy emergency in Michigan, and while that might sound intense, the goal is actually pretty simple, bring gas prices down as quickly as possible.

Here’s what it means. The state is temporarily loosening fuel blend rules, specifically in parts of Southeast Michigan where nearly half the population lives. That allows stations to sell a different type of gasoline that’s cheaper to produce, and in turn, cheaper at the pump. We’re talking about potential savings of 10 to 20 cents per gallon, which may not sound huge, but adds up fast when you’re filling up multiple times a week.

What It Means for Mid-Michigan Drivers

And here’s the good news for Mid-Michigan drivers, this kind of fuel is already allowed in areas like ours, so we could see similar price relief without any changes needed locally.

This all comes as gas prices have jumped dramatically, up about a dollar per gallon in just the past month based on a report from ABC 12. A lot of that spike is tied to global tensions after military action involving Iran disrupted a major oil route, driving up costs worldwide. Michigan drivers are now paying close to $3.89 a gallon on average, the highest we’ve seen since 2023.

Whitmer says she can’t control what’s happening overseas, but she can take steps to ease the pain here at home. And for once, it looks like something might actually help.
It’s not a total fix, but right now, even a little breathing room at the pump feels like a win.
